Optical Lenses For Presbyopia

Types Of Lenses For Presbyopia

Types of lenses

Premature Presbyopia is commonly treated with prescription optical lenses which are available in multiple ranges:

  • Single near-vision lenses
  • Multifocal lenses

These include:

  1. Bifocal lenses
  2. Progressive lenses

Progressive lenses

Single Near Vision Lenses:

These lenses have a single focal point over the entire surface of the lens.

When you have near vision problems like presbyopia or hyperopia then these lenses are a good option for performing near tasks and can be removed when the task is done.

Multifocal Lenses:

Why is there a need for multifocal lenses?

It is inconvenient for some people who need glasses for both near and distant vision to change their pair of glasses each time or have to replace them frequently. That is why it is better to have a single pair of lenses that contain distance as well as near prescription.

  1. Bifocal Lenses:

Bifocal lenses have two compartments of vision. The middle visible horizontal line separates two portions. The upper portion is for distance prescriptions, while the smaller lower portion is for near prescriptions.

There are different types of bifocal lenses, such as D (Flat Top), KT (Round), No-Line, or Executive (E-Line).

  1. Progressive Lenses:

Progressive lenses are multifocal optical lenses that provide multiple powers for distance prescription, intermediate prescription, and near prescription. These lenses are not separated by visible horizontal lines.

TYPES OF PROGRESSIVE LENSES

  1. Computer Progressive Lenses:

An alternate name for these lenses is “office lenses” or “near variable focus lenses”. Their main purpose is to provide clear and sharp vision at short distance ranges

Advantages:

  • They reduce visual fatigue and eye strain.
  • They improve neck discomfort and help to maintain your head in a natural position.

Disadvantages:

  • These lenses can be only used for computer work.

Optical lens

  1. Standard Progressive Lenses:

These are regular progressive lenses that are used by many people.

Advantages:

  • They provide a wide reading range.
  • Available at an affordable price.

Disadvantages:

  • Specific frame size is required for these lenses to fit in because if the frame is too small then the reading power may get lost.
  1. Premium Progressive Lenses:

They are also called “free-form design”. They provide a clearer vision because they are 100% digitally surfaced.

Advantages:

  • These lenses can fit in any type of customized frame.
  • They have better adaptability.

Disadvantages:

  • They are very expensive.
  1. Short Corridor Progressive Lenses:

They are designed to be fitted in smaller frames. Since their fitting can be a bit tricky, a skilled and trained optician is needed to fit them properly. These lenses have a short corridor for reading vision so you should keep your eyes centered for reading.

Advantages:

  • They are fitted in small frames due to which they provide extra help to children and to those with a smaller faces.

Disadvantages:

  • May cause distortion in vision
  • Can be difficult to adapt to them

Progressive lenses

  1. Ground-View Progressive Lenses:

These lenses are better for outdoor activities and give you a natural vision.

Advantages:

  • They give you a better vision for outdoor activities like golf, driving, etc.

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive than standard progressive lenses, but less costly than premium progressive lenses
  1. Transitions Progressive Lenses:

These are photochromic lenses. When exposed to ultraviolet light these lenses darken to provide shade for the eyes and when exposed to dim light they quickly become clear.

Advantages:

  • These lenses are suitable for both outdoor & indoor activities as they provide a two-in-one function.

Disadvantages:

  • If UV protection is already added to the windscreens of cars, then sometimes it becomes difficult for these lenses to darken.
